I have a question about a programming book?
I found this book, “The Black Art of Video Game Console Design” on the internet. It has good reviews, but I want to know if it is good for what I’m looking for.
I need a book that talks about building a game engine as well as programming a game. I want to know about the electrical aspect and ultimately… what makes a video game console run. The book must be a good, “How to…” book.
For anyone who has read it… is this a good book for me or is there something else you would recommend?
Note: I have no knowledge of programming. I’m very good at math. However, you’ll need to explain any programming language you use.
Okay, it’s time to work a little bit on your expectations. I worked on and had fun with Andre LaMothe’s Tricks of the 3d game programming Gurus. I can assure you that based on that if building a game and a game engine are what you want — this game is for you. A game engine, however, is not the console itself. A video game is usually a specialized implementation of a language interpreter. In other words not only is adventure similar in many ways (as a computer science program) to perl or the old Microsoft BASIC (or any other BASIC) but the difference between it and say, modern quake or half-life games is mainly that the input is with a joystick, pad mouse or keyboard, not with individula words. The game engine is the software which runs the interpreter in other words.
LaMothe is one of the most brilliant computer scientists working in Video Games. He is also a good writer and explainer. I do NOT know about his credentials as an electrical engineer however.
It generally costs more to build a video game console than it does to buy it — because there are economies of scale and most have proprietary designs which prevent games written for them being run on other machines. There are open source game consoles out there — which haven’t caugh on though anyone can make them. They tend to use Linux as an OS (and OpenGL). I would definitely read this book if you are interested in the insides of a game console, but the cheapest thing you can build — believe it or not — is a desktop pc and I would definitely consider looking around to see if you can. You will find that it is still cheaper to buy one, but you can build it.
