Best console/hardware purchase for a returning/wannabe adult video gamer?

I used to have an old Nintendo NES and I think somewhere in my house there’s a white Playstation from ages ago – I want to get back into gaming and see what the Halo and Neverwinter Nights fuss and all that is about. What’s the best console to get for an adult gamer into fantasy games and no so much into sports? The console would also be used by others for general games like Mario Bros. and retro type stuff so the console would be put to good use even if I got tired of it.

I don’t want to buy a lot of games, just a few that will keep me busy for a while, so the console doesn’t have to be able to play every game, but have the good fantasy ones available for it. There should be enough variety for the others who will be sharing the console.

On-line playing with others is a plus, but not a must. I have DSL and a Mac at home if that makes a difference for hardware or connectivity.

Since you are just getting back into gaming, most games will be new to you. Since you like fantasy games, I’d recommend getting a good old PS2. Since the PS3 came out, the price on the PS2 has dropped significantly. And the PS2 has a great variety of games, especially fantasy RPGs.
